Kenneth Hudson’s GTR

Kenneth Hudson’s game remembered was almost 71 years ago. Hudson shared with TGR the game was early in the 1951 season and his school, Solsberry was playing Smithville.  The Hornets were up on Smithville by a couple of buckets in the first quarter. Kenneth started at guard and decided to launch one up a little out of his range. He remembers his coach yelling something like, “Easy now” and much to Hudson’s delight the shot went in. He doesn’t remember much else about the game. Smithville won pretty handily. He started the first four games before the coach went with a more talented sophomore.

Nothing really special about the story. Almost every player remembers hitting a shot the coach didn’t want him to take and unfortunately many of us remember losing our starting position to a teammate. But not everyone played for an Indiana Hall of Fame coach. Hudson’s coach was Guy Glover. Glover started his coaching career at Solsberry then went on to Bloomfield were in 25 years his teams won 10 Sectionals, 2 Regionals, and 2 Wabash Valley Tournaments.  And the sophomore who stepped in his starting position, was Donnie Abram. Donnie became one of the best players to play for the Hornets and played his freshman year of college at Indiana University. TGR
