SALUTE TO COACH REX HUDSON (92 Years Young!)
Last night the 2023-24 season of the Bloomfield Cardinals boys basketball team launched with a solid 58-41 victory over the Owen Valley Patriots. Watching this game got me to reminisce on my remarkable 30-year journey supporting the Cards. As a proud member of Cardinals Nation, I have been blessed to witness some truly EXTRAORDINARY coaches in action: McBride, Bucher, Britton, Hudson, McBride (again) and now Neill. But do you know who I would have most wanted to play for? None other than the nicest, kindest, smartest, humblest, most dedicated and respected sports coach in the long history of Greene County—COACH REX HUDSON!
On November 9, 2023, Coach Rex and I enjoyed a tasty lunch at Crossroads Cafe. He generously shared with me some prized mementos, team photos, season stats, news clips, offensive plays, etc. that he accumulated during his lengthy and highly successful stint as the Cards JV Coach. Honestly, as a player I would have “run thru a brick wall” to have pleased this remarkable man, and I can only imagine the unforgettable and inspiring stories “his boys” have told their family members over the years!
In conclusion, it takes a coach who possesses ZERO EGO and always exudes a TEAM FIRST ATTITUDE to turn down head coaching jobs elsewhere to instead fully support his community and head coach—Guy Glover—to accumulate 489 victories and HOF membership!
P.S.—I’m sure Coach Rick Hudson was looking down from Heaven and immensely enjoying our interesting conversation!
